Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.

The cheat-code culture around River City Ransom is iconic even by NES standards. The name-entry password system let players skip straight to endgame stats — the legendary MShin/Technos/Japan triple-name unlock (enter “MShin” for Alex, “Technos” for Ryan, “Japan” for the password field) grants near-max stats, $999.99, and every technique book from the jump. Game Genie cartridges shipped with infinite-health, infinite-money, and stat-multiplier codes that turned Alex and Ryan into unkillable gods; the 77-code library cite remains one of the deepest for any 8-bit brawler. RCR’s two-player co-op, mordant humor (“BARF!”), and systemic depth made it a rental-store fixture and a permanent fixture in the “games that defined the NES” canon.
Grab every coin the instant it drops. Downed enemies scatter cash—walk over it before it vanishes. Money buys permanent stat boosts at shops: punch damage, kick speed, stamina, willpower. You need those upgrades to survive past the first few screens.
Drill the basic combo: Punch → Punch → Back+A (backflip kick). Two jabs stun most early thugs; the backflip launches them and grants invincibility frames. Mash A over a downed enemy to mount and pummel for extra damage and coins.
Swing weapons until they flash, then throw them. Trash cans, pipes, chains, tires, crates—all hit harder than bare fists early. When the item flashes (low durability), toss it with B and grab something fresh. Rocks respawn infinitely.
Hit Merlin’s Mystery Shop first (far left of the starting area). Buy Smile Burger or Sushi Deluxe—both restore health and boost Punch or Kick permanently. Early stat growth is exponential; one meal trivializes the Frat Guys fight.
Never fight more than two enemies at once until you’ve leveled up. River City gangs swarm. Backpedal to thin the crowd, backflip kick for space, throw stunned enemies into their friends. Positioning beats button speed.
Write down your password after every shopping trip. Pause and copy the 24-character code. River City has no battery save—die without a password and you restart from zero stats.
Grind the first two screens before pushing forward. Farm Generic Dudes and Frat Guys until you bank $30–40. Buy Dragon Feet (kick upgrade) or Acro Circus (agility boost) before heading toward the school.
Buy Acro Circus and Dragon Kick early. These two techniques — purchasable at Merlin’s Mystery Shop and Armstrong Thru-Way dojos — give you reliable air attacks and knockdown power that transform crowd control. Dragon Kick lets you juggle grounded enemies before they recover.
Stamina governs everything. Max HP, running speed, and damage resistance all scale with the Stamina stat. Early-game food purchases should prioritize stamina-boosting meals (smile burger, Merlin’s Mystery Mall sushi) over raw Punch or Kick increases — you survive longer and move faster through the overworld.
Weapons despawn when you leave a screen. Pipes, chains, brass knuckles, and trash cans are powerful but temporary. Carry a good weapon into a tough fight and don’t backtrack or the item vanishes. Plan your route so boss encounters happen in the same screen where you picked up the weapon.
Throw enemies into each other for massive damage. The throw command (A+B simultaneously) deals more damage than most attacks and can hit multiple gang members if you aim the trajectory. Thrown enemies also stay down longer, giving you breathing room in 3v1 situations.
Shop inventories differ by location. Not every mall sells the same stat books or techniques. Merlin’s Mystery Mall has the widest selection, but you need to visit multiple districts to unlock the full move list. Keep ~$10–15 in reserve so you can buy new techniques when you discover them.
Coins despawn on a timer. Dropped money from defeated enemies vanishes after roughly 8–10 seconds. Prioritize coin collection over chasing fleeing gang members — you need that cash for stat growth, and enemies respawn when you re-enter a screen anyway.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Armstrong Park early-game wall — Moose and Rocko guard the park entrance and hit harder than anything before them. Rush straight here from Crosstown High and you’re done. Farm the first two screens until you’ve banked $40–50, then hit Merlin’s Mystery Shop or the Sushi Bar for Punch and Kick boosts. Dragon Feet from Rexy’s Dojo ($15) alone swings the fight. Don’t step into Armstrong until your stats read 32/32 minimum.
Running out of money before the mall — River City’s economy punishes waste. Buy every technique or blow cash on Smile Burger’s $3 soda and you’re broke by mid-game with nothing to show. Prioritize Willpower and Stamina foods first — fish and tea items — so you can farm longer without folding. Save technique buys for Stone Hands ($25) and Dragon Kick ($20); their wide hitboxes turn crowds into cleanup. Trash every downed enemy; the dropped coins stack faster than you expect.
The Warehouse District respawn loop — Gang members respawn the instant you backtrack, trapping you in endless fights that bleed health. If Frat Guys or Generic Dudes reappear after you walk left, you’ve triggered it. Move right, always. Never retreat more than half a screen. Need to heal? Duck into the nearest shop instead of walking back a zone. The respawn is positional, not timed.
Slick’s final form stamina drain — The last boss has a jumping attack that chips relentlessly, and most players arrive with depleted Stamina from the Dragon Twins fight right before. Below 64 Stamina, you can’t sustain the hit-trading to close. Before the rooftop, backtrack to Oak Hill Mall and buy Merlin’s Deluxe Sushi ($38) for the Stamina spike. Pair it with Grand Slam’s knockdown loop: jump, Grand Slam, repeat as Slick stands. He can’t counter it.
