Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
Every named code, glitch, and easter egg above traces back to one of these sources. SharkVault editorial AI is grounded in human-curated facts files; nothing on this page is invented.
The cheat-code ecosystem exploded around it. Game Genie stat-boost codes let players trivialize Lavos with maxed HP/MP/Speed from Guardia Forest onward; walk-through-walls exploits unlocked sequence breaks the speedrun community still catalogues today. Nintendo Power dedicated multi-issue coverage to the ending permutations; the “Developer’s Ending” — unlocked by beating Lavos at the Millennial Fair with a New Game+ file — became the era’s ultimate Easter egg, a fourth-wall-breaking victory lap where the dev team appears as NPCs and Kazuhiko Aoki himself stands in as a sprite cite. Chrono Trigger didn’t just sell 2.65 million copies in its original run — it taught a generation that RPGs could respect your time, reward your curiosity, and let you break the rules if you knew where to look.
Talk to everyone at the Millennial Fair. Crono wakes up at home; his mom nudges him toward the festival. Wander the fairgrounds, play the minigames (strength test, soda-drinking contest, footrace), and collect Silver Points—they buy permanent stat-boosting items from Norstein Bekkler’s tent. The Pendant you’ll receive shortly is missable if you skip dialogue with Marle.
Keep your starting gear. The game showers you with equipment upgrades in the first few hours. Hoard everything—certain “obsolete” items become ingredients for late-game Rainbow Shell trades. Your inventory cap is generous.
Learn the dual-tech and triple-tech system immediately. After the first real battle (Yakra in the cathedral), experiment with character combinations in the menu. Techs that list two or three portraits deal significantly more damage than solo attacks and often hit multiple enemies. The combat tutorial is minimal; the game expects you to discover synergies by trying every pairing.
Save at every sparkle. Chrono Trigger uses visible save points (glowing columns). The first dungeon has one midway through; use it. Random encounters don’t exist—every enemy is visible on the map—but boss fights can spike in difficulty without warning.
Equip Marle’s Amulet on Crono during the Guardia Forest sequence. The accessory slot unlocks after you recruit her. The Amulet prevents status effects; the forest enemies spam blind and confuse. Swap it back to Marle before the cathedral.
Grind exactly zero hours in the first era. Chrono Trigger gates progress with story triggers, not level checks. You’ll naturally hit the expected power curve by fighting visible enemies as you explore. Over-leveling in 1000 A.D. wastes time—the next era resets the difficulty curve.
Check every sparkle, chest, and object highlight. The game hides Ethers, Tonics, and stat seeds in pots, bushes, and furniture. The Millennial Fair alone has a dozen interactables that yield consumables or Silver Points. This habit pays dividends in every era—Chrono Trigger rewards thorough exploration with permanent upgrades, not just vendor trash.
Techs unlock by level AND party composition. Double Techs require specific character pairings — Crono + Marle unlock X-Strike at Crono Lv8, but only if Marle is in the active party when he hits that threshold. Triple Techs follow the same rule. Rotate your roster during level-ups to avoid missing combinations.
The Sealed Chest exploit doubles rare gear. Any sealed chest in Antiquity (12,000 BC) can be opened in the Middle Ages (600 AD) for a weaker item, then opened again in the Present (1000 AD) for the powered-up version — netting you two copies. The Antiquity→Present route yields a single upgraded item; the three-era sequence is the duplication path. Works on Power Tab chests, too.
Speed stat governs turn order more than you think. A party member with 12+ Speed advantage often double-turns slower enemies. Prioritize Speed-boosting tabs on your primary damage dealer (Crono or Frog) before dumping leftovers into Magic or Power. The Silver Stud accessory (+3 Speed) is worth the slot in boss fights.
(Spoiler: late-game) Don’t sell your old weapons. Several upgrade at Taban’s Workshop in 1000 AD, and a few (like the Swallow) are required for the Rainbow Shell subplot. Hoard one copy of each unique weapon.
Charm-steal from bosses before killing them. Ayla’s Charm tech (learned at Lv10) pilfers unique accessories and mid-tier consumables from story bosses — many are one-time-only. Success rate is high if Ayla’s Speed exceeds the target’s; save before attempts if you want to guarantee the pull.
New Game+ is the intended endgame loop. Beating Lavos unlocks NG+ with carried stats/gear and a dozen alternate endings gated by when you fight the final boss. The Developer’s Ending requires beating Lavos at the Millennial Fair (earliest possible access). This is the genre ancestor of the modern NG+ concept.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Lavos Shell (Ocean Palace, 12,000 B.C.) — The first mandatory Lavos encounter is unwinnable by design. You’re supposed to lose. Players assume they’re under-leveled and grind for hours before trying again. The game forces the loss to advance the plot; survive a few rounds and the story continues. If you’re stuck here, you’ve already won.
Magus’s Castle (Middle Ages, 600 A.D.) — The triple boss gauntlet (Ozzie, Flea, Slash) followed immediately by Magus drains resources fast. The mistake: burning all your Ethers and Shelters before Magus. Stock at least 10 Mid Tonics and 5 Shelters before entering. Magus telegraphs his elemental shifts with barrier color changes—attack with the wrong element and he counters for massive damage. Watch the background aura: red = fire barrier (use ice/water), blue = water barrier (use fire/lightning). No barrier = physical attacks safe.
Golem Twins (2300 A.D., Geno Dome) — These paired bosses share HP and counter physical attacks with devastating AoE. The puzzle: magic-only damage. Crono’s Luminaire, Lucca’s Flare, Magus’s Dark Matter. If your party is physical-heavy (Ayla, Robo melee builds), you’re stuck. Swap to casters before entering the Dome or grind to unlock the necessary techs. The Golem Twins also absorb shadow element—don’t bring Magus unless you have his non-shadow spells leveled.
Black Omen Warp Maze (12,000 B.C.) — The teleporter sequence near the top of the Omen has no visual cues for correct paths. Players loop the same three rooms for 20+ minutes. The solution: always take the bottom-right portal first, then top-left, then center. If you hit a dead-end room with enemies, you chose wrong—use a Wing to exit and re-enter from the world map to reset the sequence. Alternatively, fight through every room; the Omen is linear if you ignore teleporters entirely.
Son of Sun (Giant’s Claw, 65,000,000 B.C.) — This boss is immune to all damage while its five Flames orbit. Players waste 10+ rounds attacking the core. You must destroy all five Flames first using water/ice techs (Ice 2, Glacier, Iceberg). Only then does the core become vulnerable. The Flames respawn after several turns, so burst the core fast with your strongest multi-target physicals once exposed.
