Duke Nukem 3D

1. Bind quick-save and quick-load immediately (F6/F9 default). Hitscan enemies shred you in seconds; save before every major encounter and after finding secrets.

2. Learn the kick (default Spacebar). Zero ammo cost, staggers most enemies, breaks vents and crates. Kick Assault Troopers before they fire, kick Pig Cops to interrupt shotgun blasts.

3. Grab the Shotgun in E1L1’s first room (behind the cinema screen, accessible via vent or by jumping the seats). Primary weapon until you find the Chaingun or RPG; the starting Pistol is hitscan-accurate but weak.

4. Crouch under laser tripbombs (default Left Shift). Don’t shoot them unless you’re far away — the blast radius is massive. Disarm by crouching and using them yourself.

5. Explore every wall panel and monitor (default Spacebar to activate). Duke 3D hides health, armor, and weapons behind destructible walls, fake monitors, and interactive switches. If it looks different, kick it or press Use.

6. Strafe-run constantly (A/D + W). Hitscan enemies lead their shots; circle-strafing breaks their tracking. Never stand still in open areas.

7. Conserve RPG ammo for Battlelords and Assault Commanders. Pipe bombs (default P) handle crowds; the Devastator is ammo-hungry. Save rockets for bosses and late-episode heavy encounters.

• Kick before you shoot in close quarters. The boot costs zero ammo, staggers most early-tier enemies, and deals respectable damage—two kicks drop an Assault Trooper on Come Get Some difficulty. Save pistol rounds for sniping or conserving better weapons.

• Crouch-jump to reach vents, ledges, and secret areas the level designer assumed you’d miss. Duke’s crouch-jump has more vertical clearance than the jump alone; most hidden atomic health pickups and RPG caches sit on AC ducts or behind breakable vent grilles accessible only this way.

• Steroids aren’t just for melee—they’re a speedrun and survival tool. Popping steroids doubles movement speed for ~10 seconds, letting you outrun Octabrain projectiles, cross lava without taking lethal damage, or blitz past Protector Drones in tight corridors. The kick also becomes a one-hit-kill against most organic enemies.

• Laser tripbombs excel at area denial and boss cheese. Place three in a doorway to delete Battlelords before they cross the threshold; stack six on a single tile under the Cycloid Emperor for an instant kill when it lands. They persist between save-loads, making them the most economical way to pre-trap chokepoints.

• The Shrinker + boot combo trivializes mini-bosses and conserves heavy ammo. A shrunk Battlelord dies to one kick; shrunk Protector Drones can’t fire back. The Shrinker uses the same cell ammo as the Expander but offers far more tactical value per shot in campaign play.

• Portable Medkit timing matters more than hoarding health. The medkit heals 100 HP over ~3 seconds and can overheal to 200 max. Pop it before taking massive burst damage (Devastator volleys, self-damage from indoor RPG shots) rather than after—the heal-over-time often saves you from what would’ve been a one-shot death.

• Jetpack fuel regenerates faster than you think. Brief taps (under 0.5 seconds) cost almost nothing; you can hover indefinitely with disciplined pulsing. Use this for Devastator aerial bombardment or to skip entire vertical sections in user maps.

• Night Vision Goggles reveal hidden switches and fake walls. The green tint makes interactive surfaces (cracked walls, subtle floor panels, camouflaged buttons) stand out against static geometry. Essential for Hollywood Holocaust’s hidden RPG and most user-map secret hunting.

E1L3 “Death Row” — Red Key Card Confusion
The red key sits behind the electric chair in the execution chamber, but the switch that kills the current is on the chair’s left side — not the front. Walk up from the front and you fry. Circle left, hit the switch on the base, then take the card. The dramatic lighting pulls your eye away from the switch; Build Engine maps reward fixture-checking.

E2L1 “Red Light District” — Underwater Passage Lockout
The flooded passage beneath the strip club has a 30-second air timer and a hidden mid-tunnel air pocket most players drown looking for. Swim forward until the vertical shaft appears on your right, surface, then continue. The oxygen meter drains faster than Doom’s rad suits. Steroids before the dive buy a few extra seconds but won’t save a slow swim.

E2L6 “Spin Cycle” — Washing Machine Platforming
The giant rotating drums demand jump-timing the game hasn’t asked for since the platformer entries. The paddle hitboxes are unforgiving; miss once and you’re in the water with a long climb back. Wait until the paddle rises 45° past vertical on your right, then jump and strafe right together. Steroids from the previous room trivialize this; speedrunners grab them for exactly this reason.

E3L4 “L.A. Rumble” — Earthquake Collapsing-Building Escape
The timed stadium collapse gives you roughly 20 seconds to reach the exit through falling debris, and the left route is a deathtrap of respawning rubble. Sprint straight from the trigger, jetpack over the first two debris piles — don’t path around — and the exit door is immediately right. Players who saved jetpack fuel from earlier clear this in one attempt; those who burned it all memorize the geometry through repeated crushing.
