Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
My booklet that came with Pokémon Gold basically fell apart and I probably had more fun reading and rereading the Golden Sun booklet than I did playing it (and I enjoyed the game a lot). Good times.
Every named code, glitch, and easter egg above traces back to one of these sources. SharkVault editorial AI is grounded in human-curated facts files; nothing on this page is invented.
Gold cemented Pokémon as a platform rather than a one-off phenomenon. The Game Boy Color’s palette made Johto feel alive — day/night cycles, weekday events, seasonal aesthetic shifts. The cheat-device scene exploded: GameShark codes for instant rare candies, master balls, shiny encounters, and wild Mew/Celebi became playground currency, while glitch hunters discovered the Coin Case arbitrary-code-execution exploit and the Celebi Egg trick, both of which let players rewrite save data with careful cry-sequence inputs cite. Gold taught a generation that Pokémon wasn’t just collectible — it was breakable, moddable, and infinitely replayable if you knew where to poke the cartridge’s seams.
Set the internal clock correctly at startup. Gold runs on real-time: day/night cycles affect wild encounter tables, NPC availability, and evolution conditions (Umbreon needs night, Espeon needs day). Get this wrong and you lock yourself out of time-gated content until you manually reset.
Pick Cyndaquil for the easiest early game. Fire-types dominate Gyms 1, 3, and 4. Totodile is solid all-around. Chikorita faces type disadvantages in five of the first six Gyms—playable, but expect more grinding.
Catch a Geodude in Dark Cave (west of Violet City) before Gym 2. Geodude walls Bugsy’s Scyther and carries you through Whitney’s Miltank at Gym 3—the single hardest fight in Johto if you arrive unprepared. Teach it Rock Throw immediately.
Buy extra Poké Balls in Cherrygrove and Violet City before Route 32. You hit a long stretch with no Mart access. Route 32–34 and Union Cave offer Bellsprout, Mareep, Wooper, and Zubat—all strong mid-game additions.
Talk to every NPC holding an item. Gold hides TMs, evolutionary stones, and Berries on overworld NPCs. The Miracle Seed in Violet City and the Everstone in Violet City’s Pokémon School are easy to miss.
Register the Bicycle to Select as soon as you get it (Goldenrod City). You swap between Bike and a field move (Cut, Surf) constantly. The default item-swap menu is slow.
Save your Master Ball for the roaming legendary (Raikou/Entei, depending on your starter). They flee on the first turn of every encounter. Suicune is stationary and can be caught with Ultra Balls after weakening.
Save your Master Ball for the roaming legendary. After encountering Entei or Raikou once, they flee on sight and wander Johto randomly. Ultra Balls have abysmal catch rates on runners; the Master Ball guarantees capture without the multi-hour tracking ordeal.
Teach a Pokémon Flash before entering Union Cave. The game doesn’t force you to use HMs for progress until much later, but Flash makes the Ruins of Alph and Dark Cave navigable. Sentret, Hoothoot, and Oddish all learn it via TM70 — keep one in rotation until you have a dedicated HM mule.
The Odd Egg from the Day Care yields a baby Pokémon with boosted shiny odds (roughly 14% versus the standard 1/8192). If you’re hunting for a shiny Pichu, Cleffa, or Igglybuff, soft-reset before accepting the egg rather than hatching hundreds.
Duplicate held items with the Pokémon Duplication Glitch before it’s patched. Deposit a Pokémon holding a rare item (Leftovers, Master Ball, TM) into Box 1 or 2, then change boxes. If the “Saving… don’t turn off the power” message appears, reset mid-save. Done correctly, the Pokémon remains in your party and the box. Works on all original cartridge releases; Crystal fixed it.
Headbutt trees in specific route tiles for Heracross. Not all trees yield rare encounters — the spawn table is determined by tree position, not route-wide RNG. Route 29’s southern trees and Azalea Town’s eastern cluster have the highest Heracross rates cite.
Breed your starter before challenging the Elite Four. Typhlosion, Feraligatr, and Meganium can’t be obtained again without restarting. Breeding with Ditto in the Day Care guarantees you can trade the baby to Silver or complete the Pokédex without sacrificing your main.
Stock up on X items before the Red fight. Six level-81+ Pokémon with perfect coverage make this the hardest battle in the series to that point. X Defend, X Special, and Guard Spec. turn a wipe into a war of attrition — they’re cheap insurance for 10,000+ Pokédollars in prize money.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Whitney’s Miltank (Goldenrod City Gym)
Whitney’s Miltank walled an entire generation. Rollout builds momentum over five turns, Attract neuters male Pokémon (most starters are), and Milk Drink heals off chip damage. The unblock: catch a female Geodude or Onix in Union Cave and teach Rock Throw via TM—Rollout’s Rock typing makes it doubly weak to Rock moves, and gender immunity to Attract lets you actually attack. Alternatively, trade the Drowzee you caught on Route 34 for the Machop in Goldenrod’s Department Store; Fighting resists Rollout and Low Kick hits Miltank’s weight class hard.
Radio Tower Takeover (Post-Rocket Invasion)
After clearing the Radio Tower basement, players miss the next trigger: you must exit the building entirely, then re-enter through the front door to progress the Rocket Executive encounter on the observation deck. The game doesn’t telegraph this. If you’re wandering Goldenrod looking for the next story beat, leave and come back. The Director’s disguise gimmick on 3F also confuses—talk to everyone wearing the uniform until you find the real one (he’s the one who doesn’t battle you immediately).
Ice Path Navigation (Blackthorn Access)
Ice Path’s sliding-block puzzles stop players because the critical path requires pushing boulders onto ice tiles to create stopping points for your own slide routes. The game never tutorializes this. Basement 1F’s main chamber is the worst offender: push the rightmost boulder down onto the ice, then slide from the left to hit it mid-slide and redirect to the ladder. If you’ve been trying to navigate the ice without manipulating boulder positions, you’re solving the wrong puzzle. HM04 Strength is mandatory—if you skipped the Olivine Café sailor who hands it out, backtrack.
Kanto Gym Leader Locations (Post-Elite Four)
Blue isn’t in Viridian Gym when you first arrive—he only appears after you’ve defeated the other seven Kanto Gym Leaders. Sabrina’s in Saffron, Misty’s on Route 25 (Cerulean Cape, daytime/afternoon only), Brock’s in Diglett’s Cave (noon–evening), Blaine’s in Cinnabar’s Pokémon Center (Tuesday afternoons per some versions; check mornings if you miss him), Lt. Surge is always in Vermilion, Erika’s always in Celadon, Janine’s always in Fuchsia. The game gives zero guidance on Misty and Brock’s schedules—sweep the obvious spots first, then check the routes.
