Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.

The cheat-device scene around Crystal dwarfed anything Gold/Silver had seen. GameShark SP and Xploder GB cartridges flooded the wild-encounter modifier space—players caught all three starters in Route 29 grass, spawned shiny legendaries, and cloned Pokémon through the Celebi event glitch without the GS Ball peripheral. The real-time clock battery and Mystery Gift IR sensor turned Crystal into a save-state manipulation sandbox—GameFAQs and early web forums like Azure Heights archived duplication exploits, stat-manipulation codes, and the “bad clone” corruption techniques that weaponized the Pokémon storage system into a code-injection vector. Crystal closed out the Game Boy Color era and codified the culture of breaking Pokémon games wide open.
Pick your starter based on early gyms, not sentiment. Cyndaquil steamrolls Sprout Tower and Falkner (Flying-type gym one); Totodile handles Falkner and Bugsy but struggles against Whitney’s Miltank. Chikorita is the hard-mode pick — Grass loses to the first four gyms.
Catch a Geodude in Dark Cave (west of Violet City) before Falkner. Rock Throw trivializes the Flying gym. Geodude also walls Bugsy’s Scyther and sets you up for Whitney if you evolve it to Graveler by level 25.
Save your money for TM83 (Return) in Goldenrod Department Store. At max happiness, Return hits 102 power with no drawbacks. Teach it to your starter or a Normal-type — it’s your best neutral-coverage move until the late game.
Grind to level 18–20 before Whitney (Goldenrod gym three). Her Miltank has Rollout, Attract, and Milk Drink — it’s the first real wall. A female Geodude/Graveler ignores Attract and resists Rollout. Male players: bring a female Fighting-type or overlevel your starter.
Talk to every NPC holding a Pokéball item sprite. Crystal has dozens of free TMs and held items (Miracle Seed, Charcoal, Mystic Water) hidden in plain sight. The Goldenrod Underground has an Everstone and Coin Case; Route 35 has TM04 (Rollout).
Box your starter after Ecruteak (gym four) if it’s underperforming. By this point you should have a Graveler, a Water-type (Tentacool, Poliwag, or Red Gyarados from Lake of Rage), and an Electric-type (Magnemite from Route 38 or Mareep from Route 32). Crystal rewards type diversity over loyalty.
Register the Bicycle to Select button immediately. You’ll toggle it hundreds of times. Goldenrod’s Bike Shop gives you the Bicycle for free after talking to the shop owner.
Breed for egg moves before the Elite Four. Daycare breeding unlocks after Goldenrod, but many competitive movesets (Belly Drum Snorlax, Crunch Tyranitar) require chain-breeding from multiple parents. The postgame Kanto gyms assume you’ve optimized your team — don’t wait.
Duplicate items with the cloning glitch. Box-change timing exploits let you clone any Pokémon holding an item (Master Balls, Rare Candies, TMs). Deposit the holder in any box, change boxes, and reset mid-save animation when the “SAVING…” text appears. The Pokémon appears in both party and box, item intact. Game Freak never patched this.
Catch a Ditto before Goldenrod for HM coverage. Ditto learns every HM via Transform and never needs a moveset slot wasted on Cut/Strength/Whirlpool. Catch one on Route 34 or 35 — it’s the only Pokémon that lets you run a full competitive team without HM slaves.
The Odd Egg from the daycare assistant has boosted shiny odds. 14% shiny rate (versus the normal 1/8192) and guaranteed to hatch a baby Pokémon with good DVs. Tyrogue, Pichu, and Elekid are the meta picks — soft-reset until you get the species and shiny status you want.
Teach Surf to a Water-type before Ecruteak. You access the Ruins of Alph puzzles, Slowpoke Well shortcuts, and Union Cave’s hidden items far earlier than the story expects. Surf is mandatory for Kanto postgame exploration — getting it on your core team (Feraligatr, Lapras, Starmie) saves a party slot.
Kurt’s Apricorn balls take 24 real-world hours per craft. Heavy Balls trivialize Snorlax/Sudowoodo captures, Fast Balls are the only reliable option for Entei/Raikou roamers, and Love Balls make opposite-gender catches (breeding pairs) effortless. Drop off Apricorns the moment you get them — the timer runs even when the Game Boy is off.
The Battle Tower bans most legendaries but allows Suicune. Crystal’s roaming-beast mechanics make Raikou and Entei flee on sight, but Suicune has a fixed encounter at Tin Tower after beating the Elite Four. Calm Mind + Surf + Rest makes it the only legendary worth training for the Tower’s Level 50 division.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Whitney’s Miltank (Goldenrod City Gym) Whitney’s level 19 Miltank is one of the most notorious difficulty spikes in the series. Rollout gains power with each consecutive hit, and Attract neuters half your team if you’re running male Pokémon. The unblock: catch a female Geodude or Onix in Union Cave and teach it Rock Throw via TM. Female Pokémon ignore Attract, and Rock moves hit Miltank’s Defense stat instead of its inflated HP pool. Alternatively, trade for the Machop in Goldenrod’s Department Store — Fighting resists Rollout and deals super-effective damage. Don’t rely on your starter alone.
Red Gyarados & Lake of Rage Trigger Players often miss that you must investigate the Lake of Rage and defeat/catch the Red Gyarados to progress Team Rocket’s plot. If Lance never appears at the lake’s north shore, you haven’t triggered the event — Surf to the center, encounter the shiny Gyarados (it’s scripted, not random), and either catch it or knock it out. Lance appears immediately after. Without this, the Mahogany Town Gym stays locked and you can’t access the Radio Tower takeover sequence. The Red Gyarados also guarantees a free Red Scale for the EXP Share trade in Route 30.
Ice Path Navigation (Blackthorn Access) Ice Path’s sliding-block puzzles frustrate players who don’t realize you need to push boulders onto specific floor switches to stop your slide momentum. The critical room is 1F’s northwest section: push the boulder down, then left onto the switch, creating a stopping point that lets you reach the ladder. If you slide past the exit repeatedly, you’re missing a switch-activated stopper. HM04 Strength is mandatory here — if you skipped the Olivine Café sailor who gives it to you after clearing the lighthouse, backtrack immediately.
Kanto Gym Leaders (Post-Elite Four) Kanto’s Gym Leaders don’t advertise their locations after you beat the Elite Four. Blue (Viridian Gym) only appears after you’ve collected the other seven Kanto badges — he’s in Cinnabar Island’s Pokémon Center until then, giving cryptic dialogue. Sabrina requires you to clear the Power Plant crisis first (talk to the manager in Cerulean). Blaine relocated to Cinnabar’s coastline after the volcano eruption — he’s on the island’s northwest shore, not in a building. Misty is on Route 25 (north of Cerulean) on specific days; if she’s absent, advance the in-game day-of-week cycle.
