Pitfall!

1. Move right the instant the game loads — the 20-minute timer starts immediately. You have exactly 20 minutes of real time to collect all 32 treasures and score 114,000 points for a perfect run.

2. Jump logs at the apex — rolling logs cycle in predictable patterns. Wait until a gap appears at the top of the screen, then jump. Touching the log sides kills you; only the top surface is safe.

3. Swing vines with momentum — press the button while moving to grab a vine. Release at the peak of the arc to clear pits. Static jumps from a standstill won’t carry you across most gaps.

4. Count screens, don’t backtrack blindly — the jungle is 255 screens wide (left and right from the start). Treasures appear in fixed locations. Going left from the starting screen yields quick early points, but wastes time without a planned route.

5. Crocodiles telegraph their bite — open mouths kill, closed mouths are safe platforms. The pattern alternates every few seconds. Wait for the mouth to close, then hop across.

6. Scorpions move in fixed loops — jump over them or wait for them to pass. They patrol small zones and won’t chase you off-screen.

7. Each underground screen is worth three surface screens — ladders descend to a lower passage that bypasses surface hazards. Exits align with surface screens, but you lose treasure opportunities while underground. Use them to recover time, not to hunt points.

• The 255 screens loop in a fixed pattern. Thirty-two treasures sit in specific rooms—money bags, silver bars, gold bars, diamond rings. Learn the map and you route; explore blind and you burn the clock.

• Underground shortcuts are worth three surface screens each. Every third screen drops a ladder to a tunnel that vaults you forward. Hit these hard—the 20-minute timer is unforgiving, and backtracking above ground bleeds seconds you won’t recover.

• Crocodile jaws open and close on a fixed cycle. Wait for the mouth to open, then jump immediately—hesitation mid-air costs a life. Mistiming by even a frame kills you.

• Rolling logs kill momentum if you fight the roll. Jump onto a log only when it’s moving in your intended direction. Jump against the roll and you’re shoved backward, repositioning while the timer runs. Wrong direction? Wait one full cycle.

• Scorpions can’t be jumped. They’re ground-level hazards with no safe window—time your run between their patrol paths. Jumping doesn’t work; collision detection treats them as full-height obstacles.

• Tar pits punish bad vine timing. Swinging across is mandatory, but the arc is wide—start your jump early or you land in the pit and lose 15+ seconds climbing out. Falling in costs a life, not just time.

• Three lives, no continues, no 1-ups, no passwords. Treasure collection persists after death, but run out of lives and the run ends. Treat every crocodile and fire like it’s your last.

The First Crocodile Pit

New players burn lives here because the crocodile jaws open and close on a fixed timer that doesn’t sync with Harry’s arrival. Wait on the left bank until you see both crocs open their mouths, then run and jump across both heads in one continuous motion. Don’t stop between crocs—hesitation kills. If you arrive mid-cycle, stand still and let the 20-minute timer tick rather than gambling. You have time.

The Three-Log River Crossing (Screens 8–12 West)

This recurring obstacle drains lives because players try to ride a single log all the way across. The logs move at different speeds and you will hit the riverbank if you stay on one. Jump between logs as you float—treat it like Frogger. Time your leap when the next log’s front edge aligns with your position. The river appears in multiple screen variants; once you learn the rhythm (jump every ~2 seconds), it becomes muscle memory.

Scorpion Hallways in Underground Sections

The underground treasure rooms have scorpions patrolling narrow corridors. Players die here because they try to jump over the scorpion—Harry’s jump arc is too shallow and you’ll land on it. Scorpions move in predictable back-and-forth patterns. Stand at the tunnel entrance, watch the pattern for one full cycle, then run under the scorpion when it’s at the top of its bounce. Don’t jump—sprint through the gap. This works for all underground scorpion rooms.

Tar Pit Quicksand (Scattered Throughout)

The black tar pits look like solid ground until Harry steps in and sinks. You have roughly 2 seconds to jump out before death. Quicksand always appears in the same screen locations on every playthrough. After your first death, map it—“Screen 15 East has tar on the right side.” On subsequent runs, jump preemptively when approaching known tar zones. The 255-screen loop means you’ll encounter the same hazards in the same places every time.
