Remember how, in the original version, you could RESURRECT Aeris!?

The cheat-code culture that grew up around FF VII was different from the Konami run-and-gun scene. GameShark owners weren’t looking for invincibility—they wanted to break the Materia system, duplicate endgame items with the W-Item glitch, and test whether the Aerith resurrection rumor was real (it wasn’t, and Nomura has said so in multiple interviews). The game’s three-disc structure, missable characters (Yuffie, Vincent), and endgame superbosses (Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon) created a completionist arms race. Players who beat Sephiroth at level 40 wanted to see what a party of maxed Materia and duped Megalixirs could do. FF VII didn’t just sell PlayStations—it sold the idea that RPGs were worth 60 hours of your life, and that sometimes the optimal path required a GameShark and a FAQ printed from GameFAQs at 2 a.m.
Name Cloud whatever you want in the opening dialogue, but leave Barret and Aeris with default names — you’ll meet party members faster than you expect, and the renaming window doesn’t come back until much later.
Buy at least 3 Potions from the shop in Sector 7 before descending to the train platform. The first reactor mission has no save point between the opening and the Scorpion Guard boss; you need healing items.
Equip the Restore Materia (green orb) you find in the reactor to Cloud immediately. Magic is gated behind Materia slots, not character levels — if it’s not socketed, you can’t cast it. Pair it with the All Materia later to unlock group heals.
Don’t sell your starting Buster Sword or initial armor. Weapons and armor have Materia slot configurations (linked pairs vs. singles); you’ll want the flexibility for different builds as you collect more orbs.
Talk to every NPC with a named dialogue box in Sector 7. Several hand out free items (Ether, Phoenix Down) that you’d otherwise have to buy, and one triggers a mandatory tutorial for the PHS party-swap system.
Save at every Save Point (glowing cubes) you encounter. FF7 has no auto-save; a bad random encounter or mistimed limit break can cost 20+ minutes of progress.
Hold Cancel (Circle/X depending on region) to flee from random encounters in the early Midgar streets. Grinding isn’t necessary yet, and conserving MP/HP for scripted fights matters more than the negligible gil/XP from trash mobs.
Master Materia early, duplicate late. Leveling a Materia to max creates a new copy at level 1 — but the real prize is mastered All + a support Materia. Master an All, pair it with a leveled Knights of Round or Mime, then sell the master for 1.4 million gil. Repeat. This is the intended economy break cite.
Enemy Skill is the best Materia in the game. Prioritize learning Beta (Midgar Zolom), Big Guard (Beach Plug on beaches near Junon), White Wind (Zemzelett in Gongaga), and Trine (Materia Keeper boss). A single Enemy Skill Materia with these four trivializes most encounters through Disc 2.
Don’t sell your Elemental Materia. Pair Elemental + Ice in armor during the Gaea’s Cliff sequence to nullify cold damage. Pair Elemental + Fire in weapon against ice-weak bosses. The same Materia slot does double duty depending on whether it’s in weapon (adds element to attacks) or armor (absorbs/nullifies that element).
Morph farming requires patience but breaks progression. Equip Morph Materia, reduce enemy HP to critical, then Morph instead of killing — many rare items only drop this way. The Ghost Ship enemy in Junon harbor morphs into Guide Book (teaches one character an extra Limit Break level). Pair Morph + Deathblow for guaranteed crits that don’t accidentally kill.
(Spoiler: Disc 1 endgame) Aeris leaves the party permanently after the Forgotten City. Strip her equipment and Materia before the Temple of the Ancients if you want to keep her best gear — the game does not auto-transfer her inventory.
W-Item duplication is not a glitch — it’s a feature. Late-game Materia; use any stackable item, the command fails but duplicates the item. Stack 99 Megalixirs, Hero Drinks, or Turbo Ethers. Square knew about this and left it in cite.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Kalm Flashback Soft-Lock (Disc 1)
Leave Kalm before triggering Cloud’s flashback at the inn and the game opens the world map but kills all story progression — no other towns activate, no plot triggers fire. You’re stuck in a dead state until you return to Kalm, climb to the second floor of the inn, and sit through the full Nibelheim flashback. This is the only mandatory gate before Mythril Mine unlocks.
Midgar Zolom Skip Confusion (Chocobo Marsh)
The marsh east of the Chocobo Farm holds the Midgar Zolom, a serpent that will one-shot your party at typical Disc 1 levels. The intended path: catch a chocobo using Chocobo Lure materia (purchased at the farm) and greens, then ride across the marsh to avoid encounters. Fighting the Zolom at level 15–20 is functionally impossible without Beta Enemy Skill cheese — which requires surviving its Beta attack with high HP. Short on gil for the Lure materia? Grind Kalm-area encounters or sell unneeded weapons and armor from Midgar.
Cargo Ship to Junon — Missing Yuffie Lock
Skip recruiting Yuffie in the forests near Junon after the Cargo Ship sequence and you cannot return to that region until much later — post-Tiny Bronco. Yuffie is the only recruitable character locked to a specific world-map window. She appears in random forest encounters on the western continent; win the battle, then answer her dialogue prompts correctly — don’t insult her, don’t let her leave. Miss her here and you wait until Disc 2 when the Tiny Bronco unlocks backtracking.
Gold Saucer Date Mechanics (Missable Dialogue)
The Gold Saucer date scene is determined by a hidden affection point system tracking your dialogue choices with Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret from Midgar onward. Want a specific date partner? Manage responses across 20+ conversations before the Ropeway trigger. No in-game indicator exists for current standings. GameFAQs hosts the full affection-point breakdown; the system is too granular to intuit blind. Most players land Aeris or Tifa by default without intervention.
Demon Gate (Temple of the Ancients) — Stop Spam
Demon Gate counters physical attacks with a powerful AoE. Equip Restore + All for party healing, burn Limit Breaks — which bypass the counter — or spam Stop magic (purchasable in Gongaga or via Time materia) to lock it down entirely. Party under level 35? Grind the forest outside the temple. Demon Gate is a sharp difficulty spike if you’ve been avoiding encounters.
