Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.

The cheat-device culture that grew up around Dino Crisis focused almost entirely on resource manipulation—infinite health, infinite ammo, all weapons unlocked—because the game’s tension derives from scarcity rather than jump-scares. GameShark and Action Replay codes circulated widely in 2000–2001 magazine spreads and early GameFAQs threads, often bundled with “unlock all modes” strings that bypassed the multiple-playthrough grind for Operation Wipeout and Battle Mode. The DDK door-lock system (color-coded keycards randomized per playthrough) made routing guides as valuable as cheat codes; speedrunners and casual players alike shared puzzle solutions for wire panels, generator conductors, and the three-disc DDK terminal. By 2003, Dino Crisis had become a staple rental-store title and a PlayStation Greatest Hits release, remembered as the game that proved survival horror could sprint.
Grab the Med Pak and Hemostat from the first room — the heliport office locker holds your only guaranteed healing before combat starts. Open it immediately.
Equip the handgun and master the 180-degree quick-turn — Run + Down simultaneously. Velociraptors are faster than you and attack from behind; the quick-turn is survival, not convenience.
Prioritize Tranquilizer Darts over bullets in the first hour — tranq ammo is more plentiful early and drops dinosaurs instantly for 20–30 seconds. Use that window to run past, not to waste handgun rounds finishing them.
Save at the first Emergency Box (Hallway 1F) — costs one Plug; you start with three. Save points are sparse and non-respawning healing is limited, so treat each save as a checkpoint commitment.
Solve the Keycard Puzzle in the Control Room before exploring further — the DDK Input Disc H and Initialize Disc unlock the facility. Skip this and you’ll burn healing resources backtracking through locked paths.
Dodge, don’t fight, in narrow hallways — Raptors lunge in straight lines. Bait the attack, sidestep at the last moment, sprint past. Fighting in corridors burns ammo you need for forced encounters.
Check the map constantly (Select button) — red doors are locked and require specific keys or story triggers. Plan routes to minimize backtracking through Raptor-heavy zones.
Hemostats over Med Paks early. First aid sprays heal more per slot, but hemostats are everywhere in the first half and free up space for plugs and key items. Save the Med Paks for bosses and the final third when hemostat spawns dry up.
Tranquilizer rounds buy time, not kills. A downed raptor stays down for roughly 15–20 seconds — long enough to solve a plug puzzle or backtrack through a room. Don’t waste grenade rounds on hallway trash; sleep them and move.
Learn the two-raptor door ambush pattern. Several save-room exits spawn raptors directly behind you the moment you leave. Listen for the hiss, spin 180°, and have the stun gun ready. Getting cornered in the doorframe is how most first-time players burn through healing items.
Plug colors unlock routes, not just doors. The DDK codes (red/blue/green input disks) determine which facility sections open and in what order. Optimal routing minimizes backtracking: prioritize blue plugs for the B1 generator sequence, then reds for the control-room bypass. Greens are almost always optional detours for ammo caches.
The Therizinosaurus doesn’t patrol — it hunts. Unlike raptors with fixed movement loops, the large herbivore in the outdoor sections actively tracks your position and can follow you through doors. If you hear the roar, commit to the next room transition or prepare to unload shotgun shells. There’s no kiting it in circles.
Save at typewriters only after major progress. Ink ribbons are finite (though less scarce than classic Resident Evil). Auto-saves don’t exist. Ideal save points: after boss kills, after acquiring new weapons, and before any timed sequence or multi-room gauntlet you haven’t memorized yet.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Power Room Keycard Puzzle (Area 1)
The DDK Input Disk puzzle stops most first runs. You need three keycards—B1, B2, B3—scattered across multiple rooms, and the game won’t tell you which doors you’ve cleared. B1 sits in the Carrying Out Path save room, B2 in the Management Office past the first T-Rex encounter, B3 in the Backup Generator room after you restore auxiliary power. Insert them in numerical order at the DDK terminal or the sequence resets. Stuck? You probably missed B2. Backtrack to the Management Office and check the desk drawer near the typewriter.
Fuel Supply Puzzle (Area 2)
The hangar refueling sequence runs on a hidden timer. You haul three Fuel Canisters from the Fuel Dump to the helipad, but each trip triggers random raptor spawns and the canisters cut your movement speed. Clear the Fuel Dump room completely before you pick up the first canister, then sprint the route without stopping to fight. Use the Emergency Stairs—fewer enemy trigger zones than the outdoor catwalks. If raptors corner you mid-carry, drop the canister (examine + cancel), kill the threat, retrieve it. No saves mid-puzzle; commit or restart from your last typewriter.
Third Energy Reactor Core (Final Area)
The reactor shutdown requires a four-digit code while a T-Rex patrols the outer ring. The code randomizes per playthrough, compiled from four data files in the Control Room, Experiment Room, and two Sub-Level terminals. Most players miss the Experiment Room file—it’s behind a locked shutter that only opens after you activate the coolant system. Sequence: activate coolant, return to Experiment Room, grab the fourth file, compile the code. Write the digits on paper; the in-game memo system won’t auto-sort them. T-Rex blocking the console? Bait it toward the north corridor, loop back through the south entrance. Its patrol AI has a predictable 8-second gap.
