Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
The cheat-device culture around SoR2 was immediate and obsessive. Game Genie and Action Replay codes for invincibility, stage select, and playable boss characters (Shiva, in particular) circulated in schoolyards and BBS boards within weeks of release. The game’s tight difficulty curve (manageable on Normal, punishing on Hardest) made infinite-lives codes a rite of passage for players who wanted to see the good ending without burning through continues. Speedrunners eventually cracked advanced tech: Blaze’s forward-dash invincibility frames, Skate’s rollerblade cancel, Max’s grab-loop infinites. TASVideos has multiple publications; speedrun.com still hosts active leaderboards for Any% and Mania difficulty categories. It’s the game that taught a generation what a perfect beat-em-up feels like—and why you needed a cheat device to unlock everything it was hiding.
Pick Axel or Blaze. Axel’s Grand Upper special and reach make him the strongest all-arounder; Blaze trades a bit of power for speed and crowd control. Skate is fast but takes hits hard. Max hits harder than anyone but moves like a refrigerator.
Press A+B for your special move. Burns health but clears the screen when you’re surrounded or need to interrupt an enemy windup. You recover the cost by grabbing food drops.
Press A while standing still for the back attack. Hits behind you without turning. Faster than repositioning and keeps you locked on the main threat.
Walk into stunned enemies to grab. Forward+attack throws them into crowds; tap attack for a multi-hit grab combo before the toss. Both deal serious damage.
Grab every weapon. Pipes extend your reach, knives throw (press attack while holding), swords cut through crowds. Drop the weapon before a boss dies or you lose it at the stage transition.
Jump kick for safe pokes. Jump toward an enemy, press attack at the peak. The flying kick has range and knocks down most regulars clean.
Save your continues for Stage 4 onward. You get five for the whole game. The back half is where Streets of Rage 2 stops being polite.
Blitz attacks grant invincibility frames. Double-tap forward, then B — the running combo gives you i-frames through startup. Punch through grouped enemies or blow past attacks you can’t dodge.
Back attacks hit instantly behind you. Press back + attack when sandwiched. Faster than turning, longer range than it looks — catches enemies mid-jump-kick before they land.
Weapons despawn on screen transitions. Picked up a pipe or knife mid-stage? Burn it before the next area loads or it vanishes. Boss arenas are the exception — weapons persist through their doors.
Special moves cost health, but grab-specials are free. Grab an enemy (forward + attack), then hit the special button (A) for a throw that deals special-move damage without the life penalty. Max’s atomic drop and Blaze’s suplex wreck this way.
Jump kicks are safe pokes but lock you in. Jumping attack is your longest-range tool and beats most enemy attacks clean, but you can’t act again until you land. Don’t throw it into crowds — one hit staggers you and the rest pile on.
Enemy life bars lie. Galsias and Donovans can take an extra hit or two after their bar empties if you don’t use a knockdown move. Finish with a combo ender (attack × 3) or a special to guarantee the kill.
Stage 6 (the elevator) has a damage cap. You can’t lose more than half your life per fight in the descending-elevator gauntlet. Low on health? Let the next wave beat you to the threshold, then special-spam with impunity — you can’t die until the Zamza fight.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Stage 5 elevator ambush (Skate/Blaze players)
The descending-elevator fight before Abadede spawns waves from both sides with almost no safe space. Skate and Blaze lack the raw damage to clear groups fast enough. Burn your special (B+C) liberally—health management matters less than survival, and a turkey waits two screens ahead. Drop the knife-throwers first; a thrown blade interrupts your combo and leaves you open to the Galsia rush from behind.
Stage 6 motorcycle gauntlet (all characters)
The Mona/Lisa bike duo in the construction zone has a tight damage window. Attack head-on and you eat tire hits. Walk to the bottom edge and wait for the bikes to pass, then jump-kick as they turn around—this catches the rider during the vulnerable turnaround frames. Two clean hits per pass. Grab them off the bike and the second rider blindsides you every time.
Stage 7 Shiva fight (Max players)
Max’s slow walk speed makes Shiva’s jump-kick pressure nearly unmanageable—he resets to neutral faster than you can close distance. The corner-trap strategy (back Shiva into the left or right edge, spam standing punches) works for Axel and Blaze but fails for Max because Shiva’s AI reads your startup frames and counters. Bait the jump-kick, block it, then immediately grab. Max’s grab priority beats Shiva’s wakeup attack, letting you loop throws until the health bar breaks.
Stage 8 final stretch before Mr. X (all characters)
The double-Shiva encounter right before the boss door is the actual skill check. The game spawns both simultaneously with full aggression. Do not fight both at once. Sprint to the top of the screen and use the narrow vertical corridor to force single-file engagement—only one Shiva can reach you at a time if you stay locked to the upper boundary. Abuse jump-kicks to maintain spacing. If they sync their jump-kicks, you’re dead; spacing is survival.
