Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
The code scene around Perfect Dark was deep and weird. GameShark codes delivered the expected infinite ammo and invincibility, but the real payoff was skipping the unlock grind: every weapon, every multiplayer character, every challenge scenario could be force-enabled without the brutal time trials. Action Replay and CodeBreaker followed with moon-jump codes, enemy-freeze toggles, and one-hit-kill modifiers that trivialized Perfect Agent difficulty. The game’s internal cheat menu—unlockable through in-game challenges—offered a legitimate path to invincibility and DK Mode, but the device codes let players bypass the 30-hour gauntlet. Perfect Dark was the N64’s last major code-culture release, arriving as the PS2 era opened and the cheat-device market pivoted toward save-game exploits and disc-based methods.
Expansion Pak is mandatory — Perfect Dark won’t boot campaign or most multiplayer without the N64 Expansion Pak installed. No Pak means training missions and a stripped Combat Simulator only.
Clear the four Device Training scenarios — Firing Range, Holograph, CamSpy Remote, and Obstacle Course unlock weapon database entries and teach the gadget toolkit: laptop gun sentry mode, CamSpy possession, data uplink timers. Skip them and you’re guessing at secondary fire functions.
Play campaign on Agent first — Agent difficulty has the fewest objectives per mission and lighter enemy placement. Mission 1 (dataDyne Central: Defection) teaches the core: stealth approach, objective markers, alarm management. Learn the geometry here before Perfect Agent adds patrols and tighter alarm windows.
Master the aiming toggle — Default 1.2 Solitaire control: stick moves, C-buttons strafe, R enters precision aim. Hold R to aim, release to return to hip-fire movement. GoldenEye veterans know the scheme, but Perfect Dark’s enemy AI is faster and punishes static positioning.
Explore Combat Simulator presets early — The Combat Simulator ships with 30+ scenario templates (Hold the Briefcase, Hacker Central, King of the Hill) and adjustable bot skill. The Challenges menu has 30 pre-configured trials that unlock characters and map variants before you touch campaign cheats.
Learn Laptop Gun and Farsight immediately — Laptop Gun secondary fire deploys an auto-turret; Farsight XR-20 sees and shoots through walls. Both weapons define the N64 multiplayer meta and are banned in most competitive rulesets for exactly that reason.
Difficulty tiers gate unlocks separately — Campaign cheats, weapons, and Challenges unlock per difficulty. Beating Mission 3 on Agent does not unlock Perfect Agent rewards; you replay missions on higher tiers to fill the cheat roster.
Disarm first, question later. Enemies drop better weapons than you start with in most missions—the Dragon, Callisto NTG, and Cyclone are all AI-exclusive until you pry them loose. On Perfect Agent, ammo scarcity makes weapon pickups the difference between clean runs and restart loops.
Simulants are training partners, not punching bags. Combat Simulator bots can be set to PerfectSim or DarkSim difficulty and placed on your team in co-op scenarios—use this to practice objective routing without the pressure of a second human player. MeatSims make excellent moving target practice for headshot drills with the Laptop Gun’s sentry mode.
The Farsight’s wallhack is a crutch on Agent, a liability on Perfect. Its see-through-walls gimmick telegraphs your position with a bright targeting beam and chews ammo. For speedrun-adjacent play, the Laptop Gun sentry or Reaper’s grinder mode offers better area denial without the accuracy tax.
Crouch-walk past cameras and guards in stealth missions. Joanna’s crouch state reduces detection radius significantly—critical for dataDyne Central and Chicago objectives where alarms auto-fail certain bonus criteria. The motion tracker (default C-down) shows enemy facing and patrol paths through walls.
Reload-cancel with weapon swap. Tap the previous-weapon button mid-reload to interrupt the animation, then swap back—saves 10–15 frames per cycle on the CMP150, Dragon, and other slow reloaders. Speedrun.com IL boards rely on this for time saves in ammo-heavy missions like Attack Ship.
Aim-mode sensitivity scales with the Expansion Pak resolution toggle. Hi-res mode (accessible in the options menu if the Pak is installed) tightens the aim-assist window but increases input lag on NTSC hardware—most competitive players stick to lo-res for consistency.
Challenge unlocks are faster than Campaign grinding. Firing Range medals, Combat Simulator win conditions, and the Obstacle Course times gate cheats and bonus weapons. The Classic weapons (PP7, Moonraker Laser) require GoldenEye-adjacent times—consult GameFAQs challenge lists rather than brute-forcing Campaign on Perfect first.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
dataDyne Central: Defection — Perfect Agent roof escape
The rooftop extraction on Perfect Agent difficulty stops runs cold. Four dataDyne shock troopers spawn the instant you step onto the helipad, two with Dragon rifles that shred shields in under a second. Don’t trigger the spawn. Hug the left wall exiting the stairwell, crouch-walk to the far edge of the helipad’s raised platform, then sprint diagonally toward the hover bike. The spawn trigger is a rectangular zone covering the center third of the roof—stay outside it until you’re past the bike’s collision box and you mount and escape before the troopers materialize. Speedrunners call this the “ghost mount”; it saves 15–20 seconds and a near-certain death cite.
Chicago: Stealth — CI flight path confusion
Mission 3’s final objective—reaching the taxi for extraction—has no waypoint marker and the street grid looks identical in all directions. Players circle the same two blocks for minutes. The taxi parks in the alley behind the G5 Building, the tallest structure with the blue neon crown. From the plaza where you disable the comms hub, face the G5, turn 90° right, and follow that street one full block. The alley entrance is on your left, marked by two dumpsters and a flickering streetlight. The taxi honks once when you’re within 30 meters.
Pelagic II: Exploration — MegaByte weapon location
The optional superweapon is in the flooded lab complex, Section C-3, behind a door that requires both the lab technician’s keycard AND shooting the control panel above the doorframe with a charged Mauler shot. Most players have the keycard but never notice the panel—it’s the same gray as the wall and sits 8 feet up. Without destroying it, the door stays locked even with correct credentials. The MegaByte is on the equipment rack opposite the entrance. This weapon trivializes the Skedar on Deep Sea and Mr. Blonde on War! cite.
Attack Ship: Covert Assault — reactor core defense waves
The four-minute defense sequence while the core overloads spawns Skedar in three predictable waves from the two side corridors. New players stand in the center room and get flanked. Position yourself in the LEFT corridor entrance with a Callisto NTG or Reaper. All spawns funnel toward you single-file; the narrow corridor prevents their melee lunge. Reload during the 8-second gaps between waves.

Thank y'all for joining me for my first Perfect Dark N64 stream ❤️ It was super interesting to finally play this game past the first level. It has it's charm, but I definitely died a lot of ridiculous ways 😂 Been loving my Analogue 3D lately. I really appreciate the support fo
