Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
The cheat-device scene exploded around it. CodeBreaker and Action Replay Max codes for infinite grip stamina, radar-always-on, and boss-rush modes let players dissect Kojima’s clockwork without the pressure of detection meters. The dogtag collection system—requiring first-person holds on every guard variant, difficulty-specific—became a completionist obsession, and infinite-ammo codes turned the game’s combat-avoidance design inside out. TankerRaiden mods, European Extreme unlocks, and VR-mission time-attack codes built a secondary culture of players who treated the game as a systemic playground rather than Kojima’s directed experience. No PS2 stealth game generated more code-list pages on GameFAQs or more heated arguments about whether cheating “ruined the point.” That tension—between authorial intent and player agency—is exactly what MGS2 was about.
Enter first-person view on reflex. R1 drops you into FPV — the only way to read patrol cones, scan room geometry, and land tranq headshots. The Tanker drills this in the first five minutes; skip the lesson and you’ll eat alerts.
Cycle gear like you mean it. Triangle for weapons, Square for items. Hold Square in FPV to steady your shot. Boss fights live and die on fast swaps — build the muscle memory before the pressure hits.
Knock to create gaps. Tap Square near walls, lockers, railings — guards investigate sound, opening patrol windows. Works on every difficulty; European Extreme makes it mandatory.
Grab, choke, interrogate. Approach from behind, tap Square to grab, tap again (no direction) to choke out. Aim your equipped weapon at a grabbed guard and they’ll drop items or intel. Some only talk when you aim at specific body parts.
M9 headshots drop guards silent. Body shots need 2–3 darts and risk waking; heads go down instant. Downed guards wake after ~3 minutes unless you drag them (grab + move) into lockers or shadows.
Save at every node, Codec every room. Nodes glow green — Triangle to save. Codec (Select) updates with context advice from Campbell, Otacon, Rose. They’ll hint puzzle solutions and warn about what’s next.
Difficulty changes guard posture, not just damage. Normal forgives slop; Hard+ guards get wider vision cones, faster reactions, radio backup in seconds. European Extreme strips the targeting reticle entirely.
Tranq darts don’t stop radio calls. A guard who spots you can still hit the comm even after you tag him—you’ve got 2–3 seconds to sprint in and choke him before the alert triggers. On higher difficulties, treat every sighting as reinforcements incoming unless you’re already in grab range.
Lockers hide bodies and you. Stuff an unconscious guard in a locker and he drops off the patrol-rotation checks—AI won’t open them to investigate. You can also hide inside; guards who open the door get stunned for a half-second, giving you a grab window. On European Extreme, it’s one of the few reliable panic buttons.
First-person aiming exposes you but reveals enemy cones. Tap R1 to enter FP view and you’ll see guard vision cones (the white overlay during Alert) and hear directional footsteps more clearly. The cost: you lose peripheral vision and can’t move fast. Use it to time sprints between patrols, not mid-evasion.
Cardboard boxes fast-travel and distract. Specific boxes let you ride cargo elevators or conveyor belts to skip entire floors—the game prompts you on-screen when it’s an option. Knocked-over boxes also pull guards to investigate, buying you 5–10 seconds to reposition. On Hard and above, guards kick suspicious boxes, so don’t camp inside one near a fresh disturbance.
Grip gauge matters more than health in hold-ups. Aim at a guard’s head or back to trigger a stick-up; they drop items if you aim at specific body parts (head = dog tags, limbs = ammo). Your grip stamina drains while aiming—if it empties, your hands shake and the guard bolts. Eat rations between floors to keep it topped, especially before boss-rush segments where you want every dog tag.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Tanker Chapter: Aft Deck (Olga Boss Fight)
Players burn rations standing still and trading shots in the open. Olga’s laser sight telegraphs every burst—sidestep when the beam locks, step out from the tarp-covered crates, fire 2–3 M9 rounds, duck back. She fake-reloads to bait movement; stay behind cover during reload animations. On higher difficulties, tranq the searchlight first—denies her the aiming advantage in rain.
Plant Chapter: Strut F Warehouse (Fatman Bomb Disposal)
The Coolant spray’s detection radius is tighter than it looks, and Fatman plants decoys. Grid-search every corner in first-person—bombs emit a faint high-pitched beep audible through headphones. The second-floor catwalk behind the northwest stairwell hides the most commonly missed bomb. Fatman himself is easy (circle-strafe, shoot when he pauses to drink), but he plants a final bomb during his death animation—always near his body.
Arsenal Gear: Ascending Coils (Naked Raiden Segment)
The no-equipment gauntlet after the Colonel’s breakdown has a 40% mission-abort rate cite. Guards converge from both staircases; sprinting straight up the central path triggers an unwinnable alert. Grab the AKS-74u from the first landing, backtrack down and eliminate the two guards entering from below, then ascend while hugging the right-side railing to avoid searchlight cones. Cartwheel (X + direction) has more invincibility frames than the roll—slip past the final pair.
Harrier Boss (Arsenal Roof)
Lock-on only works when the Harrier hovers to fire missiles—Vamp taunts, missile-pod doors open, then you lock and fire. Two hits per hover phase. Shooting during strafing runs wastes Stinger ammo. The shipping containers provide cover but explode after repeated hits; rotate between all four corners. On Extreme, equip rations in advance—missile splash damage is unavoidable and the fight becomes resource attrition.
