Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.

The cheat-code culture around San Andreas was unprecedented. Rockstar shipped 87 button-combo cheats (jetpack, infinite ammo, pedestrian riot mode, flying cars) that felt like developer debug tools handed straight to players. GameShark and Action Replay releases followed within weeks, unlocking cut content, stat manipulation, and vehicle spawns that let you skip the unlock grind entirely. The PC version’s CLEO modding scene and the later discovery of Hot Coffee’s hidden files turned San Andreas into a modder’s playground and a permanent fixture in “games as cultural battleground” discourse. No other open-world game before or since shipped with such an explicit invitation to break it.
Beat “Big Smoke” and “Sweet & Kendl” — the first two missions open free-roam and activate spray-tag collection. Skip the tags; you need the map unlocked.
Take the BMX outside CJ’s house — Grove Street missions don’t hand you cars early, and the bike outruns your feet. Bike skill climbs with every mile; wheelie challenges later demand it.
Save at the Ganton safehouse after every mission — no mid-mission checkpoints. Die or get busted, you start over. Floppy-disk icon on radar marks the save.
Eat once per in-game day — CJ’s muscle and fat shift with diet and exercise. One Cluckin’ Bell or Burger Shot meal silences the hunger warning. Ignore the gym until “Drive-Thru” forces you there.
Steal a four-door (Greenwood, Voodoo) and garage it — early missions require picking up gang members. Two-doors make them climb into the back seat, burning seconds. The Ganton garage holds one vehicle.
Learn the wanted-level system — one star brings foot pursuit, two stars brings squad cars and roadblocks. Hit a Pay ‘n’ Spray (spray-can icon) or swap clothes at the wardrobe to drop stars. Don’t stack three stars until you carry body armor and real firepower.
Ignore side grinds (burglary, taxi, paramedic) until the second island opens — early-game stat caps and vehicle locks make these inefficient. Story missions unlock Los Santos International and the Badlands; prioritize those.
Save before every story mission. San Andreas auto-saves after mission completion, but a failed attempt kicks you back to your last manual save—often miles away from the mission start. Keep a rotating set of save slots so you’re never more than ten minutes from where you need to be.
Eat regularly but don’t overdo it. CJ loses muscle and gains fat dynamically. Two meals a day keeps the stat bars stable; binge at Cluckin’ Bell and you’ll waddle. Muscle mass affects melee damage and respect, so hit the gym between story arcs—but know that maxing all physical stats takes real-world hours of repetitive button-mashing.
Recruit gang members only when you need them. Grove Street families follow you after you hit a certain respect threshold, and they’re great for territory wars—but they also draw police heat in neutral zones and die frequently, forcing you to re-recruit. Save the posse for Ballas turf; go solo for side missions.
Ignore the girlfriend dating system unless you want the perks. Each girlfriend unlocks a vehicle or outfit when you hit 50% progress, but the dating minigame is time-intensive and the rewards are marginal. Millie’s keycard is mandatory for a heist mission; the rest are optional completionist bait.
Abuse the pay-n-spray amnesty. Respraying your car doesn’t just change the paint—it erases your wanted level entirely, even if you’re mid-chase. Duck into a mod shop with four stars and roll out clean. The game respects the transaction as a hard reset.
Unlock the jetpack early via the Verdant Meadows airstrip missions. It trivializes collectible hunting (tags, snapshots, horseshoes, oysters) and several story missions. You’ll need a pilot’s license first, but the airstrip becomes available after “Verdant Meadows” in the Desert missions—don’t sleep on it.
Swim to the off-limits islands anyway. The game warns you that leaving Los Santos early triggers instant four-star heat, but swimming bypasses the roadblock wanted level. You can grab oysters, stash vehicles, and scope missions before the story unlocks the bridges—just don’t surface near cops.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
“Wrong Side of the Tracks” — Big Smoke misses every shot if you chase the train from behind. Pull alongside on the dirt path to the right and hold parallel at medium speed; Smoke’s cone of fire only connects when CJ’s bike is level with the flatbed cars. The paved road farther right works too — match the train’s speed and stay there.
“Supply Lines” (Zero’s RC plane missions) — the Baron’s fuel drains constantly, even when you’re coasting, and the handling is brutal. Tap X in short bursts to stay airborne without burning through the tank. Hit the two courier vans near Zero’s shop first, then work outward. The PS2 version is notoriously tight; later PC and mobile releases patched fuel drain to trigger only under acceleration. Zero’s entire strand is optional — skip it if this one breaks you.
“Learning to Fly” (Pilot School) — medal thresholds on “Destroy Targets” and the helicopter circle-strafe are harsh, but you only need bronze to unlock the Rustler, Hunter, and Hydra for story missions. On the parachute test, tap X lightly to control descent and drop straight down onto the corona — angled approaches miss.
“Freefall” — the Dodo accelerates like a cargo barge and the Shamal’s tail hitbox lies. Take off from Verdant Meadows pointing slightly northwest to intercept the Shamal’s flight path earlier. Climb to 500–600 feet immediately; if you’re still below the jet when it hits the red marker over Bayside Marina, restart. Approach from slightly above and behind — the corona is bigger than it looks.
Las Venturas gang territory — you can’t recruit Grove Street members until you finish “Home Coming” and take back at least one Los Santos territory. If you’re grabbing Venturas turf early for cash, bring body armor and an AK from Ammu-Nation; fighting three waves solo is doable but slow. Molotovs clear clumped spawns.

'DRIV3R' released on this day in 2004. The third entry in the Driver series drove consumers mad on release - boasting a litany of bugs and half-baked content - due to Atari's insistence on beating 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' to market. The risky play did not pay off.
Bad Game Hall of Fame (@bghof.com)

A "skip the whole game" strat has been found in the OG release of GTA San Andreas... and it's somehow infinitely more insane than the other versions.
