Why this one is in the canon, and how to start it well.
Every named code, glitch, and easter egg above traces back to one of these sources. SharkVault editorial AI is grounded in human-curated facts files; nothing on this page is invented.
The cheat-code scene around FF6 cared less about infinite HP and more about access—codes to unlock endgame gear early, manipulate Esper AP, and flatten the Intangir and Brachiosaur encounters guarding the best loot in the World of Ruin. Players who cleared Kefka’s Tower with all fourteen characters became schoolyard legends; those who did it with Game Genie infinite MP and every character knowing Ultima at level 30 still earned the lap. The game’s standing as the series’ narrative and mechanical peak has never wavered—every “best Final Fantasy” argument still runs through Kefka’s laugh and the Floating Continent’s point of no return.
Name Terra, then move — D-pad navigates, A confirms, B cancels, Y opens the menu. The Narshe march is a safe tutorial; Wedge and Viper absorb damage while you learn the interface.
Fight every encounter in the Narshe caves — Terra starts at level 3 with two Magitek Armor escorts whose Tek Laser command one-shots most enemies. You’re invincible. Grind to level 5–6 before leaving; stat gains compound and GP is scarce in the World of Balance.
Steal from the Marshal boss — Locke joins after the caves; his Steal command stays relevant all game. The Marshal carries a Mythril Knife worth 150 GP. Steal success scales with level and speed. Try twice per target.
Buy Leather Hats for the party in Narshe’s weapon shop — defense and magic defense both matter. Skip Leather Armor; better drops come fast. Bank 1,000 GP for Figaro Castle.
Exhaust dialogue with unique-sprite NPCs — FFVI gates missable items and espers behind unmarked conversations. The old man in the Narshe elder’s house unlocks Fenrir later if you talk to him now. The game never flags these.
Equip Edgar’s Auto Crossbow immediately — his Tools command (Figaro Castle second shop, 250 GP) hits all enemies and trivializes randoms for 6–8 hours. Sabin’s Blitz inputs (←↙↓ + A for Aura Cannon) require practice; learn them somewhere safe first.
Save Tonics and Potions for status, not HP — Cure magic (Kirin esper, post-Returner Hideout) heals cheaper than consumables. Tonics clear Darkness and Poison. Antidotes are single-use; stock them for Vargas and the Phantom Train.
Recruit Shadow every time he’s available in the World of Balance. He’s a temporary character who leaves after scripted story beats, but skip him early (Sabin’s scenario, the return to Narshe) and you lock yourself out of his World of Ruin sidequest and his best gear. Always say yes when he offers to join.
Don’t sell relics. Final Fantasy VI is unusually generous with GP from random encounters and treasure chests, but many relics (Ribbon, Genji Glove, Offering) appear once or twice in the entire game. You can’t buy them back. Hoard everything with a Relic classification until the endgame when you understand party synergies.
Esper level-up bonuses are permanent and stackable. Each Esper grants a stat bonus on level-up while equipped (e.g., Bismarck +2 Strength). Plan your grinding: equip Espers with HP/MP bonuses early when base stats are low, then switch to Strength/Magic/Speed Espers in the 30–50 range. A character who levels with random Espers will have worse endgame stats than one following an intentional sequence.
The Colosseum in the World of Ruin is a one-item-in, one-item-out wager system. You bet an item, fight a scripted enemy solo, and win a different item if you survive. Some of the game’s best equipment (Lightbringer sword, Red Jacket) only comes from Colosseum chains. Save before every wager; the RNG and AI behavior make losses common even with optimized setups.
Gau’s Rage command learns enemy abilities permanently, but he’s uncontrollable once you issue the command. Prioritize Rages with group-target attacks (Stray Cat’s Catscratch, Aspik’s Acid Rain) or powerful single-target spells. The Intangir Rage trivializes random encounters but requires fighting Intangirs on the Triangle Island — bring Smoke Bombs to flee after Gau Leaps one.
Stamina does almost nothing. The stat governs physical block rate and status duration, but both mechanics are near-useless in practice. Ignore Espers with Stamina bonuses (Golem, Shoat) when planning level-ups; prioritize Magic, Speed, or HP instead.
Save Fenrir, the Esper that teaches Warp, until after you’ve explored optional dungeons in the World of Ruin. Warp is a convenience spell for exiting dungeons instantly, but Fenrir is also required to reach the final optional Esper (Gogo’s recruitment cave). If you equip Fenrir too early and master Warp on your entire party, you lose the tension of managing dungeon exits manually during blind exploration.
The walls players actually hit, and the way through each.
Floating Continent escape timer (World of Balance finale)
The thirty-minute countdown after Atma Weapon drops doesn’t warn you that leaving immediately kills Shadow permanently. When Kefka moves the Statues and the island collapses, you get roughly five seconds of real-time at the cliff edge to wait before the jump prompt appears. If you bail early, Shadow dies and you lose him for the World of Ruin. Save before the Atma fight if you’re on emulator; on cart, just stand at the cliff until Shadow’s sprite appears and the dialogue fires. The timer is loose enough that waiting those five seconds won’t strand you.
Locke’s Phoenix Cave navigation (World of Ruin)
This dungeon splits you into two parties and forces switch-flipping that opens paths for the other team, but the game never explains it. Players routinely strand one party behind a door with no visible exit. The play: intentionally leave one party on a switch while the other advances through the newly opened route, then backtrack to reunite them later. The Red Dragon boss guards the final switch; if you can’t find it, you haven’t killed the dragon yet. Bring Locke’s party with Fire-resist gear (Flame Shield, Ice Shield) and stack a dedicated healer in the other party for the magicite room reunion fight.
Figaro Castle disappearing underground (World of Ruin)
After the cataclysm, Figaro Castle submerges and won’t surface at its normal desert spot. Players assume it’s gone. It’s stuck mid-route between Figaro and Kohlingen. Enter the desert cave south of Maranda (the one that was just a save point before) to access the castle’s basement engine room. Fight the Tentacles boss to restore movement, then use the throne room lever to surface at either destination. Without this, you can’t recruit Edgar or access his Tools, which severely limits party flexibility.
Cultists’ Tower magic-only restriction
The tower disables all physical attacks, Tools, Blitzes, and Bushido—only Magic command and innate counterattacks work. Players who built physical-focused parties (Sabin, Cyan, Gau) hit a wall immediately. The unblock: equip Economizers (from Brachiosaur drops in Dinosaur Forest) or stack Osmose/Rasp to maintain MP, then spam Ultima/Meteor/Merton. Alternatively, Gau’s Stray Cat Rage bypasses the restriction because Rages count as enemy abilities, not player commands. The Magic Urn enemy on floor 1 can be farmed infinitely for MP restoration if you’re undergeared.

Remember when you could sit down at play, like, Final Fantasy VI without worrying that the game would disappear soon because not enough other people were playing Final Fantasy VI at the same time?
